Cyberattackers Aren’t the Only Threat to Your Business Technology

Imagine a world where cyberattackers aren’t a threat to your business. While this completely unrealistic scenario would be less intimidating, you still have to consider factors other than cyberattacks. In this blog post, we’ll be discussing those factors that are a threat to your business.

Outdated Technology and Software

In today’s world of “on-demand”, people expect things “now”. Random technology crashed due to outdated systems (hardware or software)  just aren’t acceptable in business. Faster, more responsive technology also reduces effort to perform tasks, which reduces costs. This will allow your team to focus on the real tasks at hand, instead of fighting with old and outdated technology. Of course, outdated software is often riddled with security holes, but since this article isn’t focused on cyberattacks, we won’t focus on that aspect.

As workstations and servers age, they also become less reliable and more prone to crashing. Hard Drives, even SSD’s, don’t last forever. Electronic parts fail over time. The average lifespan of a server is estimated at 7 to 10 years. Based on that, it’s not a matter of “if”, but “when” something fails.

Natural Disasters

With it currently being hurricane season, we’ve witnessed the potential of mother nature. A lot of areas were flooded. Even if you don’t live near the coast, you could still be affected by disasters such as fires, floods or tornadoes. A solid IT plan will help keep your business running without losing everything if the worst were to happen.

Poor Backup Execution

Outside of cyberattackers, we’ve discovered that both disasters and hardware failure can absolutely stop your business in its tracks. The last thing you want when things go sideways is to find out that the data you thought was being backed up wasn’t actually being backed up. Far too often, we find companies in this situation. They just assumed the exact data was being backed up, and gave it no additional thought. We won’t dive too deep into backups in this post. For a more thorough explanation of backups, check out our blog post “Backups: Is My Data Safe When EVERYTHING Goes Wrong?”.

If you take nothing else from this post, just know that reliable backups can be a lifeline when things go bad.
